Fostering Academic Excellence

There are vast academic disparities and inequities in our public education system which dramatically impact children of color and kids from low-income families. Youth in under resourced communities are disproportionately affected by the negative impact of the achievement gap, which hinders them from reaching their full potential and ultimately affects their futures.

We believe that quality education is foundational for eliminating generational poverty. We provide the tools and resources that our mentees need in order to thrive academically, and our team works hard to ensure that the youth in our program have the support they need to be successful.

We would not be able to do this without your support. Join us as we work to turn the tide of educational inequity by equipping youth so that they can achieve at the highest level academically and throughout their lives. With your help, we can work towards closing the achievement gap and breaking the cycle of poverty.

It is not beyond our power to create
a world in which all children have access to a
good education.

Combatting Childhood Trauma and ACE’s

The Challenge of Childhood Trauma

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can derail early childhood development and have profound and lasting consequences on a child’s future. ACE’s are often intergenerational and can include various forms of abuse, household dysfunction, and social factors.

Trauma has the ability to change our physiology, and when youth have experienced multiple ACE’s, it can trigger a biological reaction known as toxic stress. This is especially harmful to children because their brains and bodies are still developing. When a child experiences or has sustained a great deal of adversity, the stress response system gets activated over and over again. This excessive activation of the stress response system can have damaging effects on learning, behavior, and health, which can have a negative impact on a child’s academic achievement and ultimately their future.

Our Approach

Despite the myriad of challenges that stem from ACE’s, there are ways to counteract lasting harm. Research indicates that supportive relationships with healthy caring adults can attenuate or even reverse the damaging effects of toxic stress.

At the Resilient Project, we take a holistic approach to combatting ACE’s and trauma.

We believe that intervention and prevention are imperative to mitigating the negative impact that trauma has on early childhood development. Through mentorship, we provide a strong support system and a safe nurturing environment that promotes healing and empowers youth to cultivate and develop resilience.

Safe, stable and nurturing relationships are one of the most important factors in building resilience, and they are essential to ensure that the kids in our program are able to thrive and reach their full potential.

Our mentors work with mentees and their caregivers on strategies that support cognitive, social, emotional and physical development so that our youth can successfully cope with life’s challenges, regulate stress, and process their emotions and feelings in a healthy way without turning to maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Partner With Us

Every Child deserves to be a part of a community that fills them with a sense of belonging and hope. At the Resilient Project, we are devoted to being a place where that hope, belonging, and healing is tangible for every child we serve.

We believe that every child has intrinsic value and God has a purpose and a plan for their future. Their identity is not defined by the trauma they have experienced, and their future should not be determined by those experiences either.

Deep-seated trauma has consequences that can shift the entire trajectory of a child’s life. With your help we can empower our most vulnerable children to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma by giving them the tools, connections, and resources they need to flourish.

You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear.

Creating Equitable Access to Quality Music Education

The Importance of Music Education

Music plays a significant role in early childhood development. It has been proven that quality music education positively impacts children’s cognitive development, social skills, and academic achievement. Alongside those benefits, music can be profoundly cathartic and therapeutic for youth who have experienced trauma.

Sadly, there is an alarming disparity in the music education available for youth in low-income or under-resourced communities compared to youth in more affluent communities.  Underserved youth who need these opportunities most are disproportionately less likely to receive them.

Music education is powerful. The problem is access. We seek to change that.

Our Approach

At the Resilient Project, we are working to create equitable access to quality music education for the youth in our community because we want our youth to flourish academically and holistically.

First, music education can help youth succeed and achieve in the classroom. Research indicates that music education makes a significant difference in the academic trajectory of youth in economically depressed communities and can be a major contributing factor to closing the academic achievement gap. Low-income students who are involved in music programs are more than twice as likely to perform at higher levels academically than their peers who are not involved in music programs.

Second, music education can help youth heal and cope with trauma. Youth from low-income families consistently experience more ACEs and are at a greater risk for the harmful outcomes of toxic stress. When children have experienced toxic stress, the stress response system becomes hyper-vigilant, which can have a negative impact on academic achievement. However, music therapy can fundamentally alter the nervous system, calming the way the body responds to stress, which ultimately helps foster academic success and healthier emotional development.

Our program pairs mentees with professional music instructors and dedicated musicians who volunteer their time and talent to serve the youth in our program. Our mentees have access to our professional recording studio where they can receive lessons at no cost, learn to record, write music, and/or play an instrument. The knowledge they acquire from our music program will translate into so many other areas of their life and will help them to develop essential skills that are integral for life long success.

Partner With Us

Music gives us a unique platform to connect with the youth in our program.

Children often struggle to connect through traditional therapy, but music allows them to express themselves, talk about difficult experiences, and process their emotions in a healthy way. Music can play a powerful role in therapy and is critical for healthy development so that youth can tap into their creativity and cultivate their unique potential.

We believe that every child deserves access to quality music education, regardless of their zip code or socioeconomic status.

With your help we can provide the tools and resources to help our most vulnerable children flourish academically, creatively, and holistically.

Early sustained music learning is actually the frame upon which education itself can be built for low-income kids.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,
      the Father almighty,
      maker of heaven and earth,
      of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
      the only Son of God,
      begotten from the Father before all ages,
           God from God,
           Light from Light,
           true God from true God,
      begotten, not made;
      of the same essence as the Father.
      Through him all things were made.
      For us and for our salvation
           he came down from heaven;
           he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
           and was made human.
           He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
           he suffered and was buried.
           The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
           He ascended to heaven
           and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
           He will come again with glory
           to judge the living and the dead.
           His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the Lord, the giver of life.
      He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
      and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
      He spoke through the prophets.
      We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
      We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
      We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
      and to life in the world to come. Amen.
